One Month Old Yesterday!

Satchel on her play mat alternately gazing and swatting at the animals

It's so hard to believe how time has flown and that Satchel is one month old.  For Matt and I, it feels as if the time has slipped through our fingers.  I began this blog thinking I would begin posting right away after the birth.  But, the turn of events that has been our birth story has hindered that plan a bit.  So, I'll try to do a bit of a review of the last month to catch everyone up.

I went into the hospital for an induced labor on Tuesday, July 21st after it was discovered that the amniotic fluid was becoming depleted.  I labored that evening and the next day until 4pm when Satchel started having decelerations in her heart rate and the decision was made to do an emergency cesarean section.  Satchel was born at 4:30pm on July 22nd.  It was amazing how quickly the c-section can be done once a decision is made that it's necessary.  Following the c-section, we were home for a week and I developed what turned out to be a bowel obstruction that then perforated.  I had emergency surgery to resect a portion of my small intestine and then spent some of the hardest three weeks of my life in the hospital recuperating.  Not exactly the birth story we had planned on, but we have learned through this tough time how fortunate we are to have such fantastic, loving, and supportive family and friends.  We couldn't have made it without you!
